Yannick Essertel est Docteur HDR (Habilité à diriger les recherches). Il est qualifié aux fonctions de Professeur des universités en Histoire contemporaine. Il est chercheur associé au CREDO (CNRS-EHESS-AMU). Il est spécialiste d'histoire des contacts entre l'Europe, l'Océanie et l'Afrique au XIX° siècle et début XX°siècle. Son approche est transdisciplinaire : histoire, géopolitique, anthropologique et religieuse.
