About
Jope Tarai is an indigenous Fijian and Pacific Island Scholar, who has served in delivering tertiary regional education to 12 Pacific states at the University of the South Pacific. He has taught undergraduate students across all disciplines in the generic, graduate qualifying course titled - Ethics and Governance in the Pacific. This is in addition to the basic introduction to politics course for first year undergraduate students. In doing so, Jope has taught and worked in Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

In research he has published in The Contemporary Pacific Journal, Pacific Journalism Review, Journal of Pacific Studies, Australian National University Press and the Australian Journal of International Affairs. Jope's broad areas of research include but are not limited to Digital Politics, Pacific Regionalism, Diplomacy, Fiji Politics, Pacific Labour Mobility, Relationality, Development and Aid in the Pacific.

  • Masters Research (2014 to 2018)
    — The University of the South Pacific
    The thesis examines the history and negotiations of the South Pacific Tuna Treaty from the 1980s and in the most recent 2000s re-negotiations. The thesis sought to answer whether collective diplomacy mattered for the Pacific states and if so why and how.
  • PhD Research (2021 to 2025)
    — Australian National University
    Digital Oceania was initially the proposal that was guided by the panel towards Digital Politics in Fiji. The project now examines the use of social media by Fijians and whether it is informing their exercise of power.
